ARDA-NJ Finds Body in Torched Building

Prepared by Ramapo Rescue Dog Association

July 2005

On April 11, a 29 year old man left his home to attend an addiction support group meeting at a church just around the corner from his house. However, he never returned home and was reported missing the next day. Initial searches were unsuccessful until June, when police received a tip as to the area where his body might be found.

On June 17, the Ramapo Rescue Dog Association, ARDA-NJ, was called to search a wooded area near a burned out house. It was suspected the house had been torched on April 13 to destroy evidence and, after being searched by authorities, was boarded up. Handlers requested the opportunity to search the building with the dogs prior to searching the surrounding terrain.

The house was opened and two dog teams were worked consecutively. Both dogs indicated decisively in a burned out room close to the source of the fire. Investigators were shown the spot and, digging down through the rubble, they found the remains of the missing man.
